~ Big Mouse Reviews ~

Big Mouse's Ambience One is a hit-and-miss collection of ambient music in the style of artists like Aphex Twin (circa Selected Ambient Works II) or, at times, A Produce (his less-rhythmic work). "Bells" has repeating low bell tones and equally deep drones. "Jade Matowa" is quirky and a bit humorous as one of the samples used seems to be that a mouth harp (ambient swamp frog music?). "Grassy Hill in Rain" is a combination of drifting Aphex Twin mixed with Tim Story melancholy. "Sunny Woods" is a pleasant ambient music trip into a forest, courtesy of well-mixed nature sounds. But a lot of what's here is darker, like the scary "Ships Passing On Foggy Night" which uses its atonalities and rumblings to good effect, or the appropriately titled "Swirling" with lush minor-key synths. The album ends with the solid "Wave" which should bring A Produce to mind for anyone who has heard one of his CDs. The album's "misses" include the opening cut, "Herald, Eyes Down," with its jarring (and way too repetitious) rhythmic distortions and "The Big One" which combines what sounds like a Franklin Delano Roosevelt speech excerpt and some Islamic minaret chanting, with underlying drones. On balance, though, there are more than a few good moments on Ambience One. Recommended, with those two reservations I listed, for darker drone-style ambient fans.

I received your CD yesterday. It is a very interesting project. I especially enjoyed "Swirling" and "Wave" and I think I will play those two tracks in the coming weeks. I also quite liked miniatures like "Ships Passing..." Thanks for sending me your music.

I have just received your latest album. Thanks a lot for sending it. The sound on this release seems to be much deeper and intense in parts, than on Ambience One. I particularly liked the powerful sound on "The Deep Hum", and I will also mention "Storm" as a possible choice for airplay. Look out for my playlists! Kind regards,

Hi, my name is Evan, and I am the "electronic music specialist" on staff at MP3.com. I just wanted to drop you a note and commend you for some provocative, brilliant, and inspiring sounds. I have a long time fascination and interest in tribal cultures, body mods, and different "states of being". Your music inspired an inner remembrance of who I am, and I would like to begin a dialog... Get back to me.

IMHO, Ambience One's one great album. Absorbing melodic lines (and you said you weren't good at melodic lines!), entrancing ostinatos, very fitting ambient fx's, all combined into very light but rich stews. Deserves to be heard far and wide. "Equinox Eve", just _too_ audacious, has to be a new high (low?) in minimalism. I've listened to that 8 minutes of I-V's three time now and still haven't had enough. Congratulations on the good work. Makes me think I have a long way to go! You guys--and gals--put on a great show tonight. Your rich sonic textures really dissolved the dome over our heads that separated us from infinite space.
